Lucy Straik said, 'You should just take a look at that crack in the ceiling, Poppa. Some old chatto this is. I bet it must be hundred years old.'

Colonel Jim, sprawled above the soft moist body, lifted his head to look down at her. 'Goddamit, Momma. Can't you pay a little attention?'

She giggled rather breathlessly under his weight. 'I was pay-in' attention, Poppa, but honest to God, you go on so long. Must be half an hour ago I hit tops. You're just too greedy all the time. Maybe you should save it up a bit at your age.'

'Poppa don't like that kinda talk, Momma. You start fancying something younger on the hoof, and—'

'Gee, I never meant that. You're great.' She wrapped her arms around him. 'C'mon now, let's go. Give Momma the old one-two.'

'If Momma's gonna watch cracks in the ceiling she better close her eyes or turn around someway.'

'Okay. So let me up a little. There. You're real mean today, Poppa.'

'I can be, honey. If I figure you're finding Poppa a kinda chore. I'll have to liven you up some.'

'You wouldn't let that Mr Sexton do anything!'

'Don't count on it. Hey, just the idea's put a squib under you, huh? Right, now...'

There was a tap on the door. Colonel Jim swore, then lifted his voice. 'Yeah? What the hell is it?'

'Sorry if you were resting,' Mr Sexton called cheerfully. 'An interesting communication from London.'

'I'll be in the study in five minutes, Mr Sexton. No, make it ten.'

Mr Sexton said, 'Right.'

Lucy giggled. 'Five, I betcha. You know Momma when she puts her mind to it.'

Mr Sexton was standing by the window when Colonel Jim came into the study, wearing a dressing gown over pyjamas, and sat down at the desk.

'You said interesting, Mr Sexton.'

'Yes. For insurance purposes I told your man in London to keep an eye on Modesty Blaise.'

'Good thinking. So?'

'A stroke of luck. He made one or two calls to the apartment block where she lives, on various pretexts, and he happened to be in reception last night when a young man arrived drunk and told the porter he wanted to see Modesty Blaise. He gave his name as Quinn, and then Stenmore heard him say, "If that doesn't ring a bell, tell her I'm the bastard she hauled out of the gorge." '

Colonel Jim rested a big hand on the desk, fingers tapping slowly. 'Reckon there's anything he could tell her?'

Mr Sexton shrugged. 'Who knows? But we were going to put him away before, to make sure.'

'Yeah. Even if this Quinn guy saw something and told her, I don't see any way she could locate us. But contingency-wise we better cover ourselves. Have Stenmore watch her place real close. I want tabs on her. If she makes a move, I want to know where she's headed.'

'I've told him exactly that, Colonel Jim. I also called Ferrand, in Toulouse, and told him to have some eyes standing by so that we can locate her if she heads this way.
